Captain James T. Kirk in S03E21 – The Cloud Minders
tos kirk gets overshadowed a lot by his pop culture depiction as a machismo womanizer which could not be further from the truth. unfortunately he also gets overshadowed by bones’s and spock’s personalities which appear to be worn closer to the surface and are more imitable. but kirk is such a Good Guy and a Good Captain and hes Funny and Smart and Caring and he could choose to run his ship like a hierarchy but instead he chooses to run it like a family and he goes around space trying to make other peoples’ lives better while forgetting about his own needs repeatedly. he’s self-sacrificing and hilarious and theatrical and noble and he wears pink and he’s even jewish and bisexual. he tried to kill god. i love him
So I know when you hear someone talk about toxic family, often the first response is to cut them off. I just want to remind people than many cannot cut their family off. A lot of people, especially disabled people, rely on their family for support, caretaking, and even financial assistance. Yes even when they’re ableist or racist or misogynist or hold horrible political views or treat them badly. Sometimes being with that family is the only way that person can survive so they deal with the bad behavior. Telling them to cut their family off when they cannot do so is insensitive, lacks empathy, and is not understanding not everyone is in a place to do so.
This is just your reminder not everyone can just cut family out for being crappy people because many of us rely on them to survive.
